Helen Lettinga (née Smith) was an American supercentenarian.

BIOGRAPHY

Helen Lettinga was born in Casnovia Township, Michigan, USA, on 6 February 1903. Her parents were Clarence E. Smith (1872–1961) and Maude Carpenter (1877–1972). She graduated from Casnovia High School in 1921 as one of just six students in her class.

She married Fred F. Lettinga (1901–1985) of Grant, Michigan, on 10 June 1925. Fred built their family home on what was then an open field, where they raised their two daughters, Judy Crombez and Mary Doyle.

After losing his painting business, Fred accepted what was initially a temporary position doing painting work at a Kroger grocery warehouse in Grand Rapids. That job became a long-term career, and he eventually retired as head of the warehouse’s maintenance department. The couple made their home in Grand Rapids for 60 years, until Fred passed away from lung cancer.

Helen continued living in the family home until 1993, when she became a resident of Pilgrim Manor. With the assistance of the staff, she maintained her independence and was still managing her daily personal needs at the time of her passing. In her younger years, Helen was an active member of Second Congregational U.C.C., where she held membership for 69 years. A life member of Grand Oriental York Chapter #32, she was also involved with the Aberdeen School PTA and Camp Fire Girls.

She attributed her longevity to a healthy lifestyle. She never smoked or drank alcohol and walked nearly everywhere during her youth.

Helen Lettinga passed away in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on 25 October 2013, at the age of 111 years, 261 days.
