BIOGRAPHY

Hill was born as Hattie Louvenia Marsh in Siler City, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA, on 1 February 1911. Her parents were Lawrence (1860–1919) and Cora Marsh (1881–1922). She had 13 siblings and half-siblings. She grew up in a Christian family who stressed the importance of being active in the church, so she became a member of Gees Grove AME Zion Church in Siler City at a young age. She remained an active member until she relocated as an adult.

In her early adulthood, she moved to Southern Pines, North Carolina, where she attended First Missionary Baptist Church. She met and married Robert Lewis, with whom she had one son, Robert. The family moved to Birmingham, Alabama. In 1945, she joined Convent Avenue Baptist Church in New York. At some point, she remarried Vincent Hill.

Hill passed away in New York City, New York, USA, on 25 March 2023, at the age of 112.
