BIOGRAPHY

Hattie Harshaw was born in Georgia, United States, on 13 December 1913. At around five years old, Hattie, along with her parents and eight siblings, left Georgia and moved to Columbus, Ohio, in search of a better life. It was there that Hattie met Gennie Harshaw, whom she married on 31 January 1931. Their marriage lasted 66 years until Gennie’s passing. The couple first crossed paths while working at a glass factory. After leaving the factory, Hattie became a devoted housekeeper for several prominent families in the Columbus area, a role she held with dedication until her retirement. She had a son, Gennie.

In her younger years, Hattie had a passion for canning vegetables, gardening, and fishing. Her yard was filled with apple trees. She cherished teaching her great-grandchildren the joys of gardening, often spending weekends with them in the garden before the arrival of cold weather. Hattie also took them to local farms to pick strawberries, green beans, and greens, or to choose pumpkins for the fall season. A devout and deeply religious woman, Hattie was a dedicated member of the East Columbus Church of Christ in Christian Union since before 1967. She faithfully attended every Sunday service and participated in every church event, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her faith throughout her life.

Harshaw passed away in Columbus, Ohio, United States, on 12 November 2024, at the age of 110 years, 335 days.

RECOGNITION

Her age was verified by Stefan Maglov and Eli Logan, and validated by LongeviQuest on 27 November 2024. Early census records indicate the possibility that she may have been a year older than she claimed. However, due to the inconsistencies commonly found in such records, it is not possible to definitively confirm a birth year of 1912 or earlier based solely on this data. Nonetheless, the available evidence strongly suggests that she was born no later than 1913.
