Haruyo Matsunaga was born in Minamikushiyama (now part of Unzen), Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, on 6 March 1906.
At some point, she became a mother. According to her grandson, she enjoyed going on holidays to visit her children. At the time of her passing, he reflected on how she used to take him around Nagasaki City. In 2006, she was visited by the mayor of Unzen City, who presented her with congratulatory gifts and a bouquet of flowers to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Haruyo Matsunaga passed away at a hospital in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, on 12 March 2017, at the age of 111 years, 6 days.
On 22 November 2015, following the death of 110-year-old Ise Masuda, she became the oldest living person in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Upon her passing, she was succeeded as the prefecture’s oldest living person by 111-year-old Kane Mori, who was only 19 days younger.
Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yumi Yamamoto, and validated by LongeviQuest on 22 December 2023.
