BIOGRAPHY

Gordon Ewers was born in Perth, Western Australia, on 2 February 1916. One of three sons, he grew up in Applecross, where his father was the headmaster of the local two-classroom primary school. He won a scholarship to Perth Modern School and, after matriculating, joined the Customs Department, where he enjoyed a long and fulfilling career. He and his wife were married for 63 years and together raised two daughters.

Remarkably healthy throughout his life, he remained in good health until the age of 100. By 106, it was reported that he had visited hospital only twice: once at the age of 12 for a broken wrist, when he was sent to Princess Margaret Hospital, and again in his 50s for the removal of his gall bladder.

When asked about the secret to his long life, he said, “Live sensibly, breath regularly, think positively and live hopefully.” He also credited his Christian faith with giving him purpose and fulfilment. He never smoked or drank alcohol and made a daily habit of drinking a glass of lemon water.
