BIOGRAPHY

Fumi Tabata was born in Shimoide, Chiran Village (now Minamikyūshū City), Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, on 15 November 1907. After graduating from Shimoide Elementary School, she attended a dressmaking school for two years and then worked at a spinning company in Kagoshima City for about three years.

In 1937, she got married and lived in Makurazaki City. After World War II, she returned to Chiran and worked as a day laborer and farmer, cultivating sweet potatoes. At the age of 92, she entered a nursing home in 1999 and played gate ball to keep fit until she was 99. Even at 100 years old, she did not need a walking stick and could change her clothes while standing.

Tabata never suffered from any serious illness. It is reported that the secret to her longevity was eating without being picky, always smiling and laughing, and cheering people up with her bright voice. In November 2007, Tabata celebrated her 100th birthday and was congratulated by the mayor of Chiran Town and others. At the time, she also cited a well-ordered lifestyle as the secret to her longevity.

Fumi Tabata passed away at a hospital in Makurazaki City, on 1 July 2018, aged 110 years, 228 days.
