Fui Onigahara (Japanese: 鬼ケ原フイ) was a Japanese supercentenarian.
BIOGRAPHY
Fui Onigahara (鬼ケ原フイ) was born on 13 December 1894 in Hanaoka, Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. She married at the age of 24 and raised eight children—five sons and three daughters—while working in agriculture.After her husband passed away when she was 76, she continued doing household chores until around age 94 while living with her fifth son.
After fracturing her left leg at age 104, she began using a wheelchair, but she continued to enjoy needlework and making otedama (traditional Japanese beanbags) until around age 106. She entered a nursing home at 106, and even at 109 she actively participated in recreational activities, including balloon volleyball with other residents.
At age 110, she maintained a regular daily routine: going to bed at 7 p.m. and waking up at 6 a.m. She washed her face, brushed her teeth, and combed her hair by herself every morning. At the time, she was reported to be 116 cm tall and weighed 25 kilograms. She moved independently by operating her wheelchair and had a good appetite, though she practiced hara‑hachi‑bu (eating until 80% full), which she considered the secret to her longevity. Her favorite foods included bananas, apples, mandarins, and brown sugar.
In December 2003, following the death of Mutsu Nomoto of Takayama, Onigahara became the oldest living person in Kagoshima Prefecture.
She passed away from natural causes on 30 June 2005 at a nursing home in Kanoya at the age of 110 years and 199 days. After her death, Nijiro Tokuda became the oldest person in the prefecture.
RECOGNITION
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 26 January 2009 and later recognized by LongeviQuest.
