Francisca Barracel Fernández was a Spanish supercentenarian.
BIOGRAPHY
Francisca Barracel Fernández was born in Allariz, Galicia, Spain, on 18 June 1902. Longevity reportedly ran in her family. Of Francisca’s five siblings, three lived well into their nineties, while another surpassed the age of 100. She had one son, José Fernández Barracel (born c.1945). Until 1954, Francisca worked in agriculture. Two years later, in 1956, the family settled in Allariz, where they opened a grocery store that also provided meals and lodging. Francisca managed the business almost entirely on her own, even carrying the family’s laundry to the Arnoia River to wash by hand.
Her husband died in 1992 at the age of 92. In 1996, at the age of 94, Francisca fell ill while living independently. As a result, she moved into her son’s home, where she remained under his care. At the age of 94, Francisca underwent intestinal surgery.
Francisca reportedly experienced difficulty walking throughout her life because one of her legs was shorter than the other, causing significant strain on her hip. However, it was abdominal surgery and the lengthy recovery that followed which ultimately left her confined to a wheelchair. Despite these setbacks, she remained remarkably healthy. At the age of 110, her family said she had recovered completely from pneumonia and noted that she had always enjoyed excellent health and ate a varied diet. By the age of 109, she had stopped speaking, although her family believed she remained fully aware of her surroundings.
Broth was among her favorite dishes. She also maintained a highly regular daily routine, adhering strictly to set times for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, as well as taking a daily afternoon rest.
At 111, she had four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Francisca Barracel Fernández passed away in Ourense, Galicia, Spain, on 18 July 2013, at the age of 111 years, 30 days.
RECOGNITION
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 18 July 2013. The validation was later recognized by LongeviQuest.
