BIOGRAPHY

Frances Mitchell was born on 4 May 1916 in Yakima County, Washington, USA. She was the fourth of nine children born to John Maissen and Mary Soler. Much of her childhood was spent helping on the family ranches, where her father raised dairy cows and her mother made cheese.

Her family, immigrants from Switzerland, learned to make the most of what they had and depended on one another through difficult times. Frances attended school through her junior year before marrying L.J. Mitchell in 1932. The couple later celebrated 77 years of marriage before L.J. passed away in 2009.

Together, Frances and her husband raised three daughters—Bertha, Theresa, and Bridget—while building businesses of their own. They also shared a love of travel, exploring the country in their motor home and taking adventures as far as Canada and Alaska.
