Flarid Lagerlund

BIOGRAPHY

Lagerlund was born in Spånga, Stockholm, on 8 February 1910, to parents Axel Teodor Karlsson (1863–1919) and Fredrika Johannesdotter (1860–1943). Her mother was nearly 50 years old when Flarid was born. Her parents emigrated to the United States at the end of the 19th century. Around the turn of the century, they returned to Sweden, and Flarid was born as their fourth child. She had three brothers. She attended school for seven years.

In 1937, she married Karl Alvar Lagerlund. The couple had at least one daughter, Monica.

Lagerlund held various jobs, including at a cable manufacturing company, a sewing studio, and a test kitchen. Later, she worked at the Port of Stockholm, where she remained for 25 years until her retirement.

Lagerlund was described by her family members as a fearless and determined person, perhaps a result of having three older brothers. She loved the forest and the sea. When they were young, she and her husband cycled all over Sweden, and after the Second World War, they drove in Germany. Until the age of 98, she enjoyed good health, shoveling snow and tending her garden in Tallkrogen herself. In 2009, she moved into a nursing home in Täby. At the age of 110, her hearing and vision were a bit poor, but she walked well with the help of a walker and participated in many activities at her nursing home.

Lagerlund passed away in Täby, Stockholm, Sweden, on 9 April 2022, at the age of 112 years, 60 days.

RECOGNITION

On 9 March 2019, following the passing of 109-year-old Ada Persson, she became the oldest living person in Sweden.

On 24 July 2019, following the passing of 111-year-old Carl Mattsson, she became the oldest living person in Sweden.

Lagerlund’s age was verified by Jimmy Lindberg and validated by the ESO on 30 July 2020.

On 10 December 2020, following the passing of 112-year-old Karla Lindholm Jensen of Denmark, she became the oldest living person in the Nordic Countries.
