Filomena Marongiu was an Italian supercentenarian. Her age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).
Filomena Marongiu was born in Villanova Monteleone, Sardinia, Italy, on 23 October 1904. She was the daughter of Giuseppe Gavino Marongiu and Lucrezia Cocco. At the age of 20, she visited an aunt in Cagliari, where she met her future husband, Leonardo Marongiu, who worked at a furniture factory in the capital. They married in 1932 and later had a daughter named Adriana.
In her later years, she remained remarkably active despite some difficulty walking and mild hearing loss. Her daily routine included rising at dawn for prayer, having breakfast, and reading the newspaper. On her 110th birthday in October 2014, Quirico Meloni, the mayor of Villanova Monteleone, traveled to Cagliari to honor her with a commemorative plaque.
Filomena Marongiu passed away in Cagliari, on 23 February 2016, at the age of 111 years, 123 days.
On 14 February 2013, following the passing of Rosa Frau, she became the oldest living person in Sardinia. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Valerio Piroddi.
Marongiu’s age was verified by Paolo Scarabaggio, and was validated by the ESO on 31 January 2020.
