Felicidad Hernández Corredera is a Spanish supercentenarian whose age has been validated by LongeviQuest.
BIOGRAPHY
Felicidad Hernández Corredera was born in Santa María de Sando, in the province of Salamanca, Castile and León, Spain, on 11 August 1913 to parents Juan Antonio Hernández Martín and Ángela Corredera del Arco. Her six brothers were born before her; so when the only girl arrived, they welcomed her with immense joy and decided to name her Felicidad (Happiness).
She remembers her childhood as a happy time in a very close-knit family. She was much loved and spoiled by her parents, Juan Antonio and Ángela, by her brothers, and also by her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Being the youngest, she was given the lighter chores, such as fetching water from the fountain or taking lunch to the men who were harvesting under the sun.
Her parents instilled in her values of piety, honesty, hard work, and generosity, and through their efforts, they provided her with the opportunity to study teaching as a boarder at the Jesuit school in Salamanca. She earned her teaching certificate, a profession she practiced for several years at the school in her hometown.
In 1941, her brother Onofre’s wife passed away. Onofre had five children, the eldest being 11 years old. Felicidad immediately offered to live with them to fill the void left by their mother’s absence.
She never married nor had children, dedicating her life to raising and loving her nephews and nieces; Jesús, Juan José, Inmaculada, Rosario, and José Luis as her own children. She was also always very close to her other siblings and nephews and nieces: Carmen, Ángel, Benigno, Aníbal, and Mary.
In 1945, they moved to Salamanca, where she continued to live peacefully with her brother and nephews and nieces. Over the years, Felicidad became “the aunt” to the entire family, friends, and neighbors.
She always loved to travel and was able to visit different parts of Spain and Portugal. In the 1970s, she went to Argentina to visit a brother she hadn’t seen in decades. And in 1983, she took a memorable trip to Italy with three of her nieces.
Among her hobbies were reading, crafts, knitting, and sewing. She underwent stomach surgery and treatment for several fractures, from which she made a full recovery. She also recovered from COVID-19 pneumonia without any lasting complications. Currently, she enjoys good overall health, although her vision is poor and her hearing is diminished. For several years, she has remained free from pain and discomfort, rarely experiences illness, requires very little medication, and maintains healthy sleep patterns. She retains an excellent memory and remains mentally sharp and cognitively active.
Hernández Corredera has always maintained a notably frugal diet. She completely avoids fish and sugar, while consuming meat and dairy products only in moderation. In contrast, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and eggs have consistently formed a substantial part of her diet. However, the foods she has enjoyed most throughout her life are traditional pork products, including bacon, chorizo, and blood sausage, which she has consumed regularly according to her preference, albeit always in modest portions.
She has always been a very beloved person by her large family and the many friends she has cultivated throughout her life. When she turned 100, a wonderful party was held in her honor, attended by her nephews, grandnephews, and great-grandnephews.
Her family described her as a charming, affable, humble, and generous person, always eager to help and much more concerned about others than herself.
She currently lives in Salamanca, Castile and León, Spain.
