BIOGRAPHY

Eugene John Baltes was born in Scott County, Minnesota, USA, on 29 October 1914, to parents John Peter Baltes (1884–1983) and Margaret Josephine Breuer (1887–1986). He had at least eight siblings: Marcelinna (1910–1910), Helen Elizabeth Kaufenberg (1911–2006), Bernadette Ann Metz (1917–2010), Vincent Herman Baltes (1919–2016), Maurice Leonard Baltes (1922–1993), Muriel Anderson (1923–2020), Francis Peter “Frank” Baltes (1925–2019), and Robert P. Baltes (1930–2018). His parents were born in the United States to German-born parents; all of his grandparents were born in Germany, except for his paternal grandfather, who was born at sea during his family’s immigration to the U.S.

During World War II, he voluntarily began his military career in November 1941 at the age of 27, and served in the Pacific Theater. After being honorably discharged, he worked for 18 years with the U.S. Postal Service. His wife, Zenaida, was his nurse at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital.

In retirement, he devoted his time to traveling, playing golf, and supporting his church. He often credited his longevity to clean living, which included never smoking or drinking. He is a member of the Illinois Regional Group.

On 20 October 2024, he celebrated his 110th birthday with a special milestone event at the Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Surrounded by family and friends, he received special recognition from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, including a congratulatory letter from Secretary Denis McDonough.
