Erika Strohrigel is an Austrian supercentenarian who is currently the nation’s oldest living resident.

BIOGRAPHY

Erika Strohrigel was born in Preßguts, Styria, Austria, on 18 August 1916. Her life took her to Vienna, where she trained to become a teacher. In the early 1940s, Strohrigel returned to Styria and built a house in Hartberg with her second husband. She had a son.

She did not move into a retirement home until the age of 100. At 108, her eyesight was reportedly quite poor, and she could no longer read. Even playing cards had become difficult. Despite this, her curiosity and sense of humor had not faded. She remained mobile with the aid of a walking stick.

In an interview with the Kleine Zeitung newspaper, she revealed her secret to a long life. She attributed her longevity to drinking little alcohol, getting plenty of sleep, going for walks as often as possible, and enjoying nature.

RECOGNITION

On 12 May 2026, following the passing of 111-year-old Anna Wagner, she became the oldest living person in Austria.
