BIOGRAPHY

Elsie Martin was born in Herbert’s Post Office, a logging camp in Northern Michigan, on 18 August 1910. She was the youngest of nine children born to parents Nelson and Nellie Persons. At a young age, her family moved to West Branch, Michigan, where they lived on farm. As a child, she taught herself to play both the piano and guitar by ear. Some time later, they once again relocated to the city of Saginaw, Michigan. Following her graduation from Saginaw High School in 1927, Martin began working for Bell Telephone.

In 1928, she married Arthur Martin, and the couple had five children together. After moving to Detroit with her husband and children, she worked at Detroit Diesel until the conclusion of World War II. She remained married to Arthur for 44 years before his death in 1972. After being widowed, she continued to live independently, as she refused to live with any of her children.

In her later years, she enjoyed going to Odawa Casino, where she was known to play very conservatively: on one outing, she reportedly spent four hours in the casino only to happily walk away with $2 more than she had spent. After receiving her drivers license at the age of 50, she continued to drive her car until the age of 96, which was the same year when she moved from her home into an apartment in Gaylord. Three years later, aged 99, she fell and broke her hip, although she was still able to walk with the assistance of a walker at the time of her 107th birthday.

Longevity was present in her family: two of her sisters lived to the ages of 103 and 102, and two brothers lived to be 96 and 97.

Elsie Martin died in Gaylord, Michigan, on 24 February 2022, at the age of 111 years, 190 days.
