Elsie Evans was born in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, on 11 July 1909, the only child of George and Ada Stephenson. She immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1923 and settled in Toronto.
In 1936, she married John Evans, and the couple moved to Moncton, New Brunswick. In 1954, they relocated to Windsor, where they owned and operated the John Evans Jewellery Store. The couple had twin daughters, Karen Workman and Brenda Hare Daniels. Her husband, John, passed away in 1978.
Elsie was a devoted member of Windsor United Church, an active participant in the United Church Women, and a dedicated volunteer with the Hants Community Hospital Auxiliary. She had a deep love for music and was a talented pianist. In June 2013, she moved into Windsor Elms Village in Falmouth.
Elsie Evans passed away in Falmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 7 February 2020, at the age of 110 years, 211 days. She was survived by her two daughters, two grandsons, and two great-granddaughters.
At the time of her passing, she was the second-oldest (known) living person in Nova Scotia, after Florence Webber.
Evans’ age was verified by Dr. Andrew Holmes and validated by the ESO on 5 October 2020.
