Elizabeth Dare was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, on 11 May 1883. She had five sisters, and her family moved to Victoria in 1890. She graduated from St. Ann’s Academy in 1900 and from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1904.
At some point, she married Brian Lipton Dare, and together they had a daughter, Maureen Mills. After being widowed at a young age, she worked in the provincial government’s Lands Department, where she specialized in lettering title scrolls.
For the last nine years of her life, she resided in the extended care unit of Mount St. Mary Hospital in Victoria, where she passed away on 16 October 1993, at the age of 110 years, 219 days.
On 12 April 1993, following the passing of 111-year-old George Ives, she became the oldest (known) living person in British Columbia, at the age of 109 years, 336 days. She held the title until her own passing in October, when she was succeeded by Alice Woolley.
Her age was verified by Eli Logan and Anri K., and validated by LongeviQuest on 31 January 2025.
