Edith Bruckner was born in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA, on 18 June 1881. In 1911, she married William Tretzel Bruckner (1869–1962), and the couple had two children: Herbert Alexander Bruckner (1912–2005) and Charlotte Sweeney (1915–2009).
Sometime in the 1920s or 1930s, during the Great Depression, she learned about a child who had been jailed for stealing a bicycle. Moved by the situation, she took action to help the child. Following this, she founded an organization in the 1930s, which later became Family Service DuPage in Wheaton. She recognized the need for a community-driven movement, where neighbors helped one another, to improve social and welfare services in DuPage County, as there were no state-funded programs at the time.
Edith Bruckner passed away in Hinsdale, Illinois, on 18 February 1993, at the age of 111 years, 245 days.
Her age was verified by Jimmy Lindberg, and validated by LongeviQuest on 22 October 2024.
