BIOGRAPHY

Berry was born in Reva, Culpeper County, Virginia, USA, on 7 March 1914, to Burnette Booten and Sallie Shanks. She had nine siblings (eight of whom were older). When she was 13, her father died, and she was sent to New York to live with her aunt Mary. She eventually became an accomplished seamstress, fashion designer, and social worker. In 1936, she married Arthur Berry, and the couple went on to have two children. Throughout her life, she maintained a home in Culpeper County, which she continued to visit once or twice a year, even in her old age.

Her older sister, Laura Annie Elizabeth Hoffman (26 March 1912 – 27 September 2020), died at the age of 108 years, 185 days.

At the age of 110, she had three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
