She was the second-oldest validated living person in the world, behind American woman Besse Cooper. At the time of her death, Hasegawa was one of only 26 validated supercentenarians to have surpassed their 115th birthday, and the second-oldest Japanese person, behind Tane Ikai.

BIOGRAPHY

Chiyono Hasegawa (長谷川チヨノ) was born in Okawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, on 20 November 1896.

At the age of 85, she moved to the town of Kiyama in Saga Prefecture. She entered a nursing home at the age of 102.

At the age of 110, she enjoyed staying active by playing balloon volleyball with other residents at her nursing home.

At the age of 113, her hearing had become weak, but her eyesight remained good. She was still able to walk short distances with assistance. She also enjoyed moving her body to old songs when they played on television.

In her later years, she often ate bread softened in milk, which she particularly enjoyed.

On 2 May 2010, the day she became the oldest validated living Japanese person, she attended a ceremony held at her nursing home announcing her new record.

Chiyono Hasegawa died in Kiyama, Saga Prefecture, Japan, on 2 December 2011 at the age of 115 years and 12 days.
