Chelidonia Merosi was an Italian supercentenarian. Her age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).
Chelidonia Merosi was born in Subiaco, Lazio, Italy, on 11 October 1883. She married Virginio Lollobrigida in 1911, and together they had five children: Antonietta, Luigi, Antonio, Tobia, and Maria. In 1929, she was widowed when her husband died of pneumonia. Years later, during the Second World War, her home was destroyed.
On her 111th birthday in 1994, a Mass was celebrated in her honor. Relatives and friends gathered for the occasion, joined by Bishop Stanislao Andreotti and actress Gina Lollobrigida, her niece. By then, her sight and hearing were no longer what they once had been, and she struggled with her legs. Yet she remained serene. At the time, she reflected: “I don’t think about anything, I live each day serenely and calmly because I’ve had a difficult life, full of painful times. Now I just wait for lunch without knowing what’s on the menu, so it’s always a surprise, and I’ll be even happier.”
Chelidonia Merosi passed away in Subiaco, Lazio, on 10 December 1995, at the age of 112 years, 60 days.
Merosi’s age was validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO) on 1 September 2025.
