BIOGRAPHY
Catherine Hedges was born in Croom, County Limerick, Ireland (then United Kingdom), on 8 July 1916. She moved to England at the age of 28 and spent most of her adult life in Reading. After settling there, she worked in a finance department.
Reflecting on some of her favourite pastimes, she was an avid fan of horse racing. She also loved the outdoors, enjoying visits to garden centres and spending time in the care home’s garden. In her younger years, she enjoyed Irish dancing. When asked what she attributed her long life to, she replied: “A clean life, good food, and the occasional glass of red wine.”
RECOGNITION
In July 2026, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming the first known Irish-born British supercentenarian. She was also the first known Irish-born supercentenarian since 2018, when Mary Walsh reached the age of 110.
Her age is currently under review by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).
