Bill Morgan was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on 23 October 1915. He grew up in a working-class family with five boys and one girl, and his parents were Scottish.
In 1935, Bill was appointed School Captain at Scotch College, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding athlete. He served as both the school’s rowing captain and ruckman for the 1st XVIII football team. His sporting achievements continued through his university years, representing Victoria in rugby while studying at Melbourne University.
Bill was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in Malvern on 24 April 1944, and went on to serve as Minister in congregations across South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. With the union of the Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches in 1977, Bill became a member of the newly formed Uniting Church. He retired from active ministry in 1984 but continued to serve in a pastoral role for the next two decades, offering guidance and care to his community.
Bill outlived two wives: Joan Winifred Howie, the mother of his three children, who passed away in 1957, and Jessie, whom he met and married later in life, who passed away in 2011.
In celebration of the 80th anniversary of his ordination, a Service of Thanksgiving was held at Glen Waverley Uniting Church on 2 June 2024. Bill was joined by his three children—Heather, John, and Libby—and members of his extended family for the occasion. At the time, he had eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
