Asakichi Okada was born in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, on 30 January 1906, into a farming family. He worked as a rice and orange farmer since childhood and continued to work in the field until his 90s.
After his eldest son passed away in 2012, he continued to live with his daughter-in-law, and five generations (seven people in total) lived together on the same property. Until his later years, he enjoyed interacting with people at the day service center twice a week. He also loved the popular Kansai TV show “Yoshimoto Comedy” and believed that the secret to his longevity was watching funny TV, laughing out loud, and eating delicious food. He was not a picky eater, and his favorite foods were meatballs, fried eggs, and miso soup. As of 2014, he was able to walk, although his legs had become weak, and he needed assistance.
Okada passed away due to old age on 15 August 2016, at the age of 110 years, 198 days.
In 2013, he became the oldest living man on Awaji Island.
On 8 September 2014, following the passing of 110-year-old Masakichi Kajita, he became the oldest living man in Hyōgo Prefecture.
At the time of his death, he was the fourth-oldest living man in Japan, behind Masamitsu Yoshida, Masazo Nonaka, and Tōichi Sasaki.
Upon his passing, he was succeeded as the oldest living man in Hyōgo Prefecture by Kōzō Imanaka (16 February 1909 – 12 April 2017) of Nishiwaki.
