Antonio Alvarado Largo was a Spanish supercentenarian who was the nation’s oldest living man at the time of his passing.
Antonio Alvarado Largo was born in Remolina, Crémenes, Castile and León, Spain, on 8 July 1912, to parents Perico Alvarado Fernández (1881–1961) and Vicenta Largo Díez (1891–1977). He had 12 siblings: Bondad (1908), Maria (1910), Agustin (1915), Carlos (1916), Protasio (1918), Emilia (1920), Isaac (1922), Pilar (1924), Vicente (1925), Emiliano (1927), Luis (1932), and Cesar (1934). His parents tried to provide him with a stable future, steering him towards either the friars or the priesthood, as was common at the time. He remarked that becoming a friar didn’t quite work out for him, so he abandoned the monastic path and became a shepherd instead. He was one of the transhumants, leading cattle to the warmer climate of Extremadura during the winter. Later on, he transitioned into a career as a miner.
When the Civil War broke out, he was sent to the front. The war led him through Asturias, Aragon, and Teruel, and he also fought in the Battle of the Ebro. After the war ended, he chose to take a new direction and became a policeman. He served as the mayor of the Crémenes City Council from 1987 to 1995.
At 108 years old, though he had mobility issues, his mind remained sharp, and he vividly recalled his childhood.
Antonio Alvarado Largo passed away in Vegaquemada, Castile and León, Spain, on 28 September 2022, at the age of 110 years, 82 days. At the time of his passing, he was living in the Vegaquemada nursing home alongside three of his brothers: Isaac, aged 100, Emilio, 95, and Luis, 90.
On 18 January 2022, following the passing of 112-year-old Saturnino de la Fuente García, he became the oldest living man in Spain, at the age of 109 years, 194 days. Upon his own passing, he was succeeded by Luis Torras Martínez.
At the time of his passing, he was the third-oldest living person in Castile and León, after Avelina Lorenzo Berián and Ángeles de la Fuente Campo.
