Anna “Annie” Rohling (née Matousek) was a Czech-born American supercentenarian who was the oldest living person born in present-day Czech Republic. Her age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO) and recognised by LongeviQuest.

BIOGRAPHY

Rohling was born as Anna Matousek in Mladá Vožice, Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic) on 12 July 1875 as the second of ten children born to farmers Martin and Victoria Matousek. The family emigrated to the United States in 1876, when Rohling was one year old. All of her younger siblings were born in the Glencoe, Minnesota area.

Rohling married her neighbour, Herman Rohling, when she was 21; the couple had 10 children. They were married for around 50 years before his death in 1947. Whilst working as a farmer near Watkins, Minnesota, Rohling was also a midwife and assisted in delivering newborn babies for 30 years.

After living with her children for many years, Rohling moved into a nursing home in New Brighton, Minnesota aged 97. Even as a centenarian, she enjoyed being active, partaking in bowling and dancing. She was illiterate, but could fluently speak three languages. One of her sisters reached the age of 100.

Rohling died on 15 August 1985 at the age of 110 years, 34 days. She was survived by eight of her children, as well as 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

RECOGNITION

Rohling’s age was verified by Elias Leivaditis and Dr. Andrew Holmes, and was validated by the ESO on 29 August 2021.
