BIOGRAPHY

Baker was born Anne Isobel Salmond, the daughter of Sir Geoffrey Salmond who later became the professional head of the Royal Air Force. She was educated at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and lived with her father and mother in both Egypt and India.

While at Oxford, she met and fell in love with Valentine Baker, and the couple married at the chapel at Hampton Court Palace. After their marriage, they moved to Anglesey shortly before the Second World War broke out. They had five children.

Baker was awarded an MBE in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), for which she has been fundraising for more than 60 years. She is possibly the oldest recipient of an MBE, receiving it at the age of 106.
