Anna Maria Capozzo was born in Molinara, Campania, Italy, on 24 January 1911. In 1932, she married Rocco Luigi Baldino, and the couple had four children: Donata, Filippo, Cosimo and Vincenzo.
In 1953, she emigrated to the United States with her family. They settled in Oyster Bay, New York, where she embraced her new life while maintaining a strong connection to her Italian roots. In 1986, she returned to Molinara, where she lived with her daughter Donata (who returned to Italy before her) until her passing. Her three sons remained to live in the United States. Locally known as “Maria l’Americana” for her time in the U.S., she remained fluent in English and maintained close ties with her American family.
Her 110th birthday in January 2021 was marked by tributes from local officials and her large family, including nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter. The celebration featured a visit from Mayor Giuseppe Addabbo and community members, who honored her with a tricolor sash, a parchment, and red roses. The event also included a video call with relatives in London and Argentina.
