BIOGRAPHY

Murphy was born on 6 February 1912 to Italian immigrant parents, Pasquale and Vincenza (née Mona) Marchitto, in Hamden, Connecticut, USA, where she had lived all her life. She was one of seven children. She and her husband, Robert B. Murphy, married in 1934, and were active members of the Hamden Elks Club. They had one son, Robert B. Murphy Jr., in 1941.While she was primarily a homemaker, Murphy also worked for a time in a bank and at a zipper manufacturing company.

In her later years, Murphy moved into the Whitney Rehabilitation Care Center in Hamden, Connecticut, where she celebrated her 108th birthday in February 2020. At the time, along with her son, she had two grandsons, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

In late April 2020, Murphy contracted COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic. While ill, she reportedly hardly ate or drank anything, nor was she very talkative. However, she did not require ventilator treatment, and her illness was managed using oxygen and IVs. About a month after first testing positive for the virus, she had successfully recovered, making her one of the world’s oldest known survivors of the disease.

Murphy celebrated her 110th birthday in February 2022 with family and friends. She died on 21 March 2022 at the age of 110 years, 43 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living resident of Connecticut, behind Mary Provost-Slocum.
