Amy Johnson was born in Westmoreland, Jamaica, on 18 October 1907, as one of five sisters. She moved to the UK in 1961 at the age of 54 to support her only child, Doreen Lee, who had relocated six years earlier to train as a district nurse and midwife. She was there to help Doreen with her first child, Stuart.
Her daughter attributed her mother’s longevity to her independent spirit. Even in her centenarian years, she remained active, had a strong Christian faith, and was a regular churchgoer, walking to St. Michael’s Church on good days. However, as knee problems developed, she attended less frequently. A self-taught dressmaker, she continued sewing well into her late 90s.
Johnson passed away in Shap, Cumbria, England, on 6 June 2018, at the age of 110 years, 231 days.
Her age has not been validated.
