Screaigh was born in York, Western Australia, Australia, on 28 July 1913, to parents Joseph Walker Marwick (1873–1940) and Mary Ellen Gurney (1874–1946). She had at least eight siblings.
At some point, she married Charles Norman “Cobber” Screigh in York. The couple had one daughter, Patricia.
Screaigh had been getting her hearing checked regularly since 2008, as she was experiencing deafness. She considers it highly important to undergo regular hearing check-ups.
On her 100th birthday in 2013, she celebrated with three separate birthday parties. She was also gifted flowers from the clinic she attends. She attributed her longevity to the fresh country air, as well as abstaining from alcohol and smoking.
