BIOGRAPHY

Alexina St. Pierre-Loyer was born in Rimouski, Quebec, Canada, on 21 November 1907, as the eldest of 17 siblings (ten sisters and seven brothers). She began her teaching career in the rural schools of Bic before moving on to teach in the greater Montreal area in the mid-1940s, dedicating 41 years to the profession. She left her birthplace due to a lack of job opportunities and moved to Montreal with her sister, Berthille St-Pierre.

In 1949, she married Lucien Loyer, and together they lived in the Rosemont district for many years. They did not have children. She lived in Rosemont with her husband until his passing in 2004. She then moved to Pointe-aux-Trembles to be closer to her sister, Berthille.

By her 107th birthday, she still had three living sisters and one brother, all of whom attended her celebration at Résidences Soleil in Pointe-aux-Trembles. At the time, she was reported to be very lucid. On her 110th birthday, she received certificates and official recognitions from the Prime Ministers of Canada and Quebec, the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec, the Member of Parliament for Pointe-aux-Trembles, and the City of Montreal.

When asked about the secret to her longevity, she admitted she didn’t know but shared a few guiding principles passed down from her parents: “Work keeps you alive, laughter is health, and prayer fights boredom.”

Alexina St. Pierre-Loyer passed away on 22 May 2020, at CHSLD Le Cardinal in Pointe-aux-Trembles (Montreal) after a brief battle with the virus.
