BIOGRAPHY

Toshiko Minagawa was born in Japan on 16 October 1911.

Minagawa lived independently even after she turned 100 years old, but at the age of 103, she moved into a nursing home. She was described by the nursing home’s staff as “a person who communicated her intentions firmly” and “a person who was sometimes strict and sometimes gentle”. Her favorite food were steak, wine, egg sandwiches, sushi and udon.

Toshiko Minagawa passed away in Minami-ku, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, on 9 March 2023, at the age of 111 years, 144 days. It was reported she had fallen ill after finishing her meal on the 7th, but she was feeling better the following day, telling the staff: “Please wake me up.”

RECOGNITION

At the time of death, she was the second-oldest living person in Hiroshima Prefecture, behind Fusae Miyamoto, who was only a day older.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li and Takehiro Shibuya, and validated by LongeviQuest on 20 August 2023.
