BIOGRAPHY

Sai Maehara was born in Tarumizu, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, on 13 June 1910. She witnessed the 1914 eruption of Sakurajima. She was widowed shortly after World War II, and raised her four children (two sons and two daughters) on her own.

As of her 112th birthday, she had eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She claimed that the secret of her longevity was that she spent her days leisurely and that she ate well.

Sai Maehara passed away in Kanoya, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan on 8 July 2022, at the age of 112 years, 25 days.

RECOGNITION

After Mitsue Tanobe of Kanoya went to limbo in March 2022, Mrs. Maehara became the oldest known living person in Kagoshima Prefecture.

Her age was verified by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW), as well as Yu Li and Ryohei Asano, and validated by LongeviQuest on 21 May 2023.

Following her death, Michi Hamada of Satsumasendai was reported as the oldest living person in Kagoshima Prefecture.
