BIOGRAPHY

Cumberland was born in the small farming community of Isabella, Manitoba, Canada, on 12 May 1911. She had four siblings.

Prior to marrying, she worked as a teacher. On 28 September 1935, she married William “Bill” Cumberland. They owned a grocery in Decker, Manitoba. The couple had two daughters, Gail and Lynne. In 1950, the family moved to Penticton, British Columbia. She never taught in Penticton, instead she raised her two daughters and was involved in community work.

Her husband passed away in 2000, aged 96. At the age of 100, she stopped driving and sold her car. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied: “Oil of Olay twice a day and living the way you are supposed to live.” In 2019, she moved into the Hamlets at Penticton assisted living facility.

Cumberland passed away in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada on 16 July 2021 at the age of 110 years, 65 days. She was survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
