BIOGRAPHY

Pilar Prieto Rubio was born in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain, on 29 November 1903. She was the eldest of four siblings, all of whom she outlived. During her childhood, her family moved to Villaviudas, Palencia, where she grew up while her father worked as a saddler.

Later, she worked as a housekeeper in Palencia, where she married Julián Pascua, had a son, Pedro Pascua Prieto, and was widowed in her early thirties. From then on, she supported herself through street vending, selling clothes knitted by her sister. She became well known and respected in the towns she visited, often accepting payments in kind from those who were unable to pay in cash.

In time, she shifted from selling clothes to offering sweets during breaks at the Palencia Teacher Training School. Eventually, she was awarded a kiosk in one of the city’s parks, which she managed together with her brother until her retirement. Pilar had a deep love of the theater and, in her youth, took part in several amateur theater groups.

After retiring, and until her admission at the age of 88 to the senior citizens’ home, she enjoyed many trips organized by the Imserso (Social Security) program, especially to Spain’s Levante coast. At the residence, she fully integrated into community life, happily taking part in daily activities, engaging in various tasks, and playing cards with her fellow residents.

Pilar Prieto Rubio passed away in Palencia, Castile and León, on 27 January 2015, at the age of 111 years, 59 days.
