Veronica Pheney

BIOGRAPHY

Veronica Pheney was born Veronica Ryan in Genoa, Illinois, United States, on 4 August 1915, to parents James Joseph Ryan and Josephine Crowe. She grew up in Rockford, Illinois, alongside seven siblings, several of whom also lived exceptionally long lives, including her sister Kathryn Keyes (101) and Mary Claire Fane (103).

Veronica pursued studies in Cost Accounting at college and, upon graduation, began her career as an accountant with the Federal Government, serving in the Air Corps. Her professional work allowed her to travel extensively, with her first assignment taking her to Okinawa, Japan. Throughout her career, she visited many parts of the world. It was during her time in Italy that she met her husband, Michael, whom she married in 1950. She was also stationed in Alabama, before settling in Lehigh Acres, Florida.

Although she never had children of her own, she has outlived the rest of her immediate family. A devout Catholic, she once had the privilege of seeing the Pope speak in person in Rome, and to this day, she continues to receive Holy Communion weekly. Veronica takes great joy in life’s simple pleasures, such as sweets and reminiscing through her photo albums.

In July 2025, she celebrated her 110th birthday in a joint celebration with fellow supercentenarian Gwendolyn Hutchinson.
