Chester Meros

BIOGRAPHY

Chester Meros was born in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania, USA, on 14 July 1915, to parents Anthony and Veronica Meros. A graduate of the local high school, he followed his father into the coal mining industry. He worked as a truck driver, hauling coal from Schuylkill County to New York City.

He met his future wife, Helen Anna Lubinsky, at a dance in Pennsylvania. She lived a few miles away in Cumbola, Pennsylvania. During World War II, he moved to Baltimore, where he joined Bethlehem Steel. He began as a machinist’s helper, then worked as a general laborer before becoming a welder. Over the years, he worked at the Bethlehem Steel Key Highway Shipyard and other shipyards in the Baltimore area. Several of his brothers joined him in building Liberty ships at the former Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard.

He retired in his early sixties after family members encouraged him to leave the physically demanding work because years of industrial noise had begun to damage his hearing. He was widowed in 2013.

His son attributed his father’s long life to good genes and a positive outlook.

Chester Meros passed away in Baltimore, Maryland, on 9 July 2026, at the age of 110 years, 360 days.
