BIOGRAPHY

Gwen Hutchinson was born in Jamaica on 25 June 1915. She came to America from Jamaica in the mid-1960s due to a nursing shortage. She worked as a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital for 15 years and also cared for children at a local welfare center.

Even at the age of 109, she continued to play the piano daily—a skill she had taught herself at just seven years old while growing up in Jamaica. When asked about the secret to her longevity, Hutchinson simply credited God. In May 2025, it was reported that she lived in the same nursing home as another 109-year-old, Veronica, who was less than two months younger than her.
