Dolores Buitrago Ruiz was born in Villanueva de San Carlos, Castile-La Mancha, Spain, on 30 June 1914. The daughter of an innkeeper, she dedicated much of her life to teaching local women in Puertollano how to sew, after spending her early years raising her siblings and helping in her father’s inn. At some point, she married Santiago and had five children, though she outlived all but her daughter Pilar.
Even in her centenarian years, she enjoyed painting and crafting, and she would gladly break into song if encouraged by her daughter or caregivers. On her 110th birthday, the mayor of Puertollano, Miguel Ángel Ruiz, along with First Deputy Mayor José Antonio Barba and Social Welfare Councillor Sagrario Almodóvar, visited her at her home in Puertollano to celebrate the occasion. She was cared for by her daughter Pilar. At the time, she had eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
