Valerio Piroddi was an Italian supercentenarian who was the oldest living man in Italy for nearly two years. His age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO) and recognised by LongeviQuest.

BIOGRAPHY

Piroddi was born in Villamassargia, Sardinia, Italy on 13 November 1905. His father died when he was eight, after which he moved to Siliqua, Sardinia.

Piroddi married in Siliqua and had two children. He worked in forestry, and was a coal burner and railwayman. He retired on state pension.

In his later years, Piroddi moved to his niece’s house in Assemini, Sardinia. As a supercentenarian, his relatives described him as “cold, authoritarian, and strong.” He was still able to walk aged 111 and was mentally sharp, albeit with deteriorating hearing.

Piroddi died in Assemini at the age of 111 years, 309 days. In addition to his two children, he was survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

RECOGNITION

Following the 22 December 2015 death of 110-year-old Salvatore Caruso, Piroddi became the oldest living man in Italy. Upon his own death, the title passed to Andrea Lattari, then aged 109.

At the time of his death, Piroddi was the fourth-oldest man ever to die in Italy after Antonio Todde, Giovanni Frau, and Arturo Licata, the former two of whom were also Sardinian. He still holds this position as of March 2024.

Piroddi was the sixth-oldest living person in Italy and the oldest in Sardinia.

Piroddi’s age was verified by Paolo Scarabaggio and validated by the ESO on 22 July 2021.
