Matilda Montague was born in Bratton Fleming, Devon, England, on 12 February 1905. She was married to her husband, Charles, for more than 71 years until his passing around 2013 at the age of 100. Together, they had at least two children: Michael Montague and Margaret Bates.
She worked as a seamstress, and even at the remarkable age of 110, her son noted that she was still knitting for children in Africa.
Matilda Montague passed away in Combe Martin, Devon, England, on 15 September 2015, at the age of 110 years, 215 days.
On 22 March 2015, following the passing of Annie Meston, she became the oldest known living person in Devon. Upon her own passing, she was succeeded by Mary Alexandra Cummings (22 May 1907 – 24 May 2016) of Exeter.
Montague’s age was verified by Dr. Andrew Holmes and validated by the ESO on 7 March 2021.
