Giuseppina Projetto-Frau was a validated Italian supercentenarian who was, at the time of her death, the oldest living person in Europe and the second-oldest living person in the world, behind Chiyo Miyako.

BIOGRAPHY

Giuseppina Projetto was born in La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy, on 30 May 1902. She was one of five daughters born to Cicillo Projetto, a native of Sciacca, Sicily, who came to Sardinia to complete his military service. He spent most of his service stationed at the fortress on Caprera. During one of his periods of leave, he met a fellow Sicilian living on the island and fell in love with his daughter, who had also been born in Sicily. After completing his military service, Cicillo chose to remain on La Maddalena, where he was employed as a cook at the Military Hospital.

Orphaned at a young age, she was raised in a boarding school until she was 21, when she returned to La Maddalena.

In 1946, Giuseppina married Giuseppe Frau, a widower with three children. She embraced them as her own and devoted herself to raising them with great love and affection.

Later, she moved to Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany, to be near her son, who had relocated to the mainland for work. He found employment at the Bitossi ceramics factory. Tragically, he died at the age of 39 while attempting to rescue tourists from the sea at Donoratico. Following his death, Giuseppina continued to live with her daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

Giuseppina Projetto passed away in Florence, Tuscany, on 6 July 2018, at the age of 116 years, 37 days.
