Efraín Antonio Ríos García, 113, a resident of Itagüí, passed away peacefully at his home today at 5:30 PM, 11 January 2024, at the age of 113 years and 282 days, after a life full of health and love.

One of his favorite hobbies was horseback riding, and in his youth he always took horseback rides on a farm, or on the shore near the Cauca River. His parents were highly appreciated and recognized people in the region. He began his studies at the Chamuscados school in Fredonia.

Efraín Antonio Ríos García was born in the countryside of the town of Fredonia, Department of Antioquia, Colombia on 4 April 1910. His legitimate siblings were Emilio, Eloisa, Carlina, Alfredo, Luisa, Francisco, Engracia and Víctor. His father married Carmen Ledesma for the second time and they had three children (Francisco, Carlos and Roberto).

Ríos García married Herminia Uribe. The couple had 18 children. They were married for 80 years.
As of April 2020, he had 80 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren. As of April 2023, ten of his 18 children were alive.
Efraín’s family would like to thank the entire international community for the appreciation, love and respect they had to Mr. Ríos García.

He will be laid to rest in the city of Itagüí, in the company of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of Mr. Ríos García.

Mr. Ríos García was born in the countryside of the town of Fredonia, Antioquia Department, Colombia on 4 April 1910. He married Herminia Uribe and the couple had 18 children. Longevity was present in his family, as his older brother, Francisco, passed away at the age of 106 in 2011. In April 2013, at the age of 103, he and his wife celebrated 80 years of marriage. His wife passed away in 2015.

The research on Mr. Ríos García’s case was initiated by Mr. Santiago Garcia Medina, who verified his age for the Latin American Supercentenarians (LAS), where he was listed as pending validation on 23 April 2021. The validation process was completed by Mr. Fabrizio Villatoro two years later.

Mr. Ríos García is currently the third-oldest living man in the world whose age has been authenticated by an organization specializing in age verification. The world’s oldest living man, validated by the LAS and recognized by the Guinness World Records, is Mr. Juan Vicente Pérez Mora of Venezuela, who is approaching his 114th birthday. The second place is held by Mr. Eusebio Quintero López, also from Colombia.
