Biography

Rodríguez Sánchez was born on 24 January 1913 in La Morisca, Cádiz, Spain. Her birth year is erroneously listed as 1914 in the town’s registry. She and her family relocated to nearby Los Barrios when she was young. At the age of nine, she started working, running errands, and cleaning for local townswomen.

Rodríguez Sánchez married Eduardo Guerrero in 1931 and had three children with him. Guerrero was wounded during World War II, and Rodríguez Sánchez would take their son Miguel to see him in Pozoblanco. She was widowed in 1955 when she was 42 years old.

Rodríguez Sánchez worked as a “matutera”, travelling to places such as Portugal, Gibraltar, and the city of Jerez, dealing with tobacco, coffee, and fabrics. Her friends occasionally accompanied her on these trips. In 1971, she went to work in the cities of Bilbao and Candanchú.

In 1980, Rodríguez Sánchez started taking care of her nine grandchildren after her only daughter, Pepa, died aged 47. She was living above her workplace in El Palmarillo, where she resided until 2015 when she moved in with a granddaughter. She was still able to read and sing at the age of 109.

Rodríguez Sánchez passed away in Los Barrios, Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, on 21 December 2023, at the age of 110 years, 331 days.
