Biography

Usami was born in Japan on 1 September 1904. She stated that she was happy to have reached the age of 111, given her belief that the number 111 is a good omen. Her favorite meal was fried oysters and drank sweet coffee every morning. She also liked to stay as active as possible, even as a supercentenarian.

On 13 January 2017, aged 112, Usami became the oldest living person in Niigata Prefecture after the death of 114-year-old Yukie Hino, the longevity record holder for the prefecture. She died in Tsubame, Niigata at the age of 113 years, 178 days, and was succeeded as Niigata’s oldest living person by 111-year-old Tora Kosugi of Kamo.
