On 22 May 1991, following the death of 111-year-old Domenico Minervino of Italy, he became the oldest living man in Europe, at the age of 109.
On 14 June 1993, following the death of 113-year-old Frederick Frazier of the USA, he became the world’s oldest living man, at the age of 111 years, 326 days.
At the time of death he was the oldest Spanish man ever recorded, and he held the title until his age was surpassed by Joan Riudavets Moll in 2002.
His age was verified by Miguel Quesada and validated by the GRG on 5 March 2009.
