Hide Ōhira was born in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan on 15 September 1880.
She married in 1899 at the age of 19 and had six children. She moved to Tanabe City in 1926 with her husband, who ran an ironworks. Her husband died when she was 72.
Her breakfast when she was living at home was toast and coffee.
In the summer of 1991, when she was 111, she fell ill, which led to having a pacemaker implanted in October because she was suffering from severe pneumonia and her heart rate dropped to the 40s.
She moved into a nursing home in 1992 and died in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan on 9 May 1995 at the age of 114 years, 236 days due to kidney failure.
