BIOGRAPHY

Berkley was born in Gaffney, South Carolina, on 8 May 1914, to parents to Edgar Rice and Alethea Alexander. As a teenager, she moved with her family to Charleston, West Virginia, and then in her twenties relocated to Cleveland with her husband. Berkley worked as a beautician for nearly 40 years. Although she never had children of her own, she gained stepchildren through her marriages.

In her early 80s, she moved to a senior living community in Shaker Heights. At 102, after becoming wheelchair-bound and experiencing memory loss due to early Alzheimer’s symptoms, she went to live with her niece and great-niece in South Shaker.

Vivian Berkley passed away in Shaker Heights, Ohio, on 26 July 2024, at the age of 110 years, 79 days.
