Sakura Kishi was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Aomori Prefecture at the time of her passing.
Sakura Kishi was born in Japan on September 28, 1899.
She raised seven children and was known as a caring person who also looked after her grandchildren. While she was not particularly talkative, she had a warm and nurturing personality. She enjoyed cooking and was especially fond of fruit, though she had no dislikes when it came to food. According to her family, “She probably lived a long life because she ate well without being picky.”
Kishi remained independent well into old age, walking and eating without assistance, and enjoyed tending to the flower beds in her garden. After suffering a stroke at the age of 99, she became bedridden. However, at the age of 107, she was still living in a special nursing home for the elderly in Ōwani Town and returned to her home in Ikarigaseki, Hirakawa City, once a month.
Her grandson Eiji, then 51 years old, shared that “Just by seeing my grandmother, people around her could feel energized and empowered.” He added that she had overcome numerous life-threatening situations and continued to inspire her family with her strength and resilience.
Kishi passed away from natural causes at a hospital in Hirakawa City, Aomori Prefecture, on February 24, 2011, at the age of 111 years and 149 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in Aomori Prefecture.
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 15 December 2010 and later recognized by LongeviQuest.
